The monument
to victory and the soldiers of verdun

The monument was completed and inaugurated in 1929 at the town centre. It has 73 steps leading to a crypt sheltering registers bearing the names of those soldiers who were awarded the Verdun Medal. A statue of a medieval armour-clad warrior, hands resting on his great sword and gazing out to the east is at the top of the 30 metre column. On the 1st November each year, the Eternal Flame is brought here from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in a commemorative ceremony at the Victory Monument. Part of the official Armistice Day services, this ceremony also includes the symbolic choice of the Unknown Soldier, whose body was taken from Verdun Citadel on the 10th November 1920. The monument itself gives a splendid view over the town.
