The ‘People’s Theatre’ has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1975. It was founded in 1895 by Maurice Pottecher and is universally famous for the backdrop that opens directly on to the forest. It isn’t solely the beauty of the theatre and its architecture that has made it renowned; it is also the originality and creativity of its shows that, for 115 years, have helped forge a solid reputation that has far exceeded Vosges frontiers. The proscenium arch bears the inscription ‘Par l'art pour l'humanité’, or ‘Through art for humanity’, expressing the poetic and utopian humanist ideal that was the basic tenet in founding this people’s theatre. Even non-theatrical fans are attracted to this magical wood constructed theatre in the forest, because a day out at Bussang is always special and productions are for everyone to enjoy. Professional and amateur actors have joined forces here at Bussang since the start. The poetry and humanity that is so characteristic of the setting is a result of a touching alchemy between all the theatrical cast. The People’s Theatre has training sessions and workshops throughout the year for theatre, writing, music and dance. There is a guided tour of the building at 10:30 every Sunday morning.
